How to install this layout
- Draw a level line at 3' (91 cm) and install the chair rail.
- Mark 3.5" (9 cm) margins under the rail, above the baseboard and between frames.
- Install the 5 frames from the centre outward so any error ends up in the corners.
- Caulk, fill and paint the wainscoting section.
Questions about this wall size
How high should wainscoting be on a 12 ft wall?
With 8 ft ceilings, 32"–36" is standard; this layout uses 3' (91 cm). Wall width does not change the height, only the frame count.
How many wainscoting panels for a 12 ft wall?
5 frames, each 2' 0.5" (62 cm) wide, fill a 12 ft wall evenly.
Can I skip the chair rail?
Yes, but the frames then need a 4"–6" top margin to look intentional; the chair rail gives the cleanest finish.
