Board and Batten Layout Planner: Exact Batten Gaps for Any Wall
New: plan your whole wall visually with live pricing in our Wall Designer. Upload a photo of your room, place frames, board and batten or wainscoting, and get a cut-ready drawing.
Enter your wall width, the batten width and how many battens you want. The calculator returns the exact clear gap between battens so the run stays even from corner to corner.
How to calculate board and batten spacing
The planner places a batten at each end of the wall and spaces the rest evenly. You choose how many battens you want and how wide they are; the gap follows from the wall width.
The formula
Gap = (wall width − battens × batten width) ÷ (battens − 1)
To start from a target gap instead: battens = (wall width + gap) ÷ (batten width + gap), then round to a whole number and recalculate the exact gap.
Worked example: a 10 ft wall
- Wall: 120 in wide, battens 3 in wide, target gap about 16 in
- Battens: (120 + 16) ÷ (3 + 16) = 7.2, so use 7 battens
- Exact gap: (120 − 7 × 3) ÷ 6 = 16.5 in
Batten gaps for common walls (3 in battens)
| Wall width | Battens | Batten width | Gap |
|---|---|---|---|
| 8 ft (96 in) | 6 | 3 in | 15.60 in |
| 10 ft (120 in) | 7 | 3 in | 16.50 in |
| 12 ft (144 in) | 9 | 3 in | 14.62 in |
| 14 ft (168 in) | 10 | 3 in | 15.33 in |
| 16 ft (192 in) | 12 | 3 in | 14.18 in |
Rules of thumb
- Gaps of 12 to 18 in suit most rooms; tighter gaps read more traditional, wider gaps more modern.
- A board and batten wainscot usually stops at one third of the wall height; a top rail of 1 to 1.5 in finishes the edge.
- Measure at the floor and at the ceiling line: older walls are rarely square, so use the shorter width.

Board and batten spacing calculator
Enter the usable width of one wall. This calculates the clear space between evenly spaced vertical battens.
How to calculate board and batten spacing
This free board and batten calculator removes both side margins and the total width of every batten from the usable wall width. It divides the remaining space into equal clear gaps so the vertical battens finish evenly from one side of the wall to the other.
- Measure the usable wall width and subtract areas blocked by doors or built-in furniture.
- Enter the actual batten width, not the nominal lumber size.
- Adjust the batten count until the clear gap suits the room scale and wall height.

Board and batten calculator questions
How far apart should board and batten strips be?
The right gap depends on wall width, batten width and the number of vertical battens. Equal clear gaps usually create the cleanest result; use the calculator to test several counts.
Should I include the corner battens?
Enter the total number of vertical battens used across the measured run. Keep the side margin fields for any clear space you want to leave at both wall edges.
