How the wall square footage calculator works

For a rectangular room, wall area equals 2 × (length + width) × height. Openings are subtracted from that gross total. A single wall is simply width × height, which is useful for accent-wall and picture-frame projects.

Worked planning example

A 12 × 14 ft room with 8 ft ceilings has 416 sq ft of gross wall area. Subtracting a 21 sq ft door and two 15 sq ft windows leaves 365 sq ft before adding any material-specific waste.

Measure unusual rooms wall by wall. Sloped ceilings, open staircases, built-ins and partial-height walls should be split into simple rectangles or triangles, then added together. Product quantity still depends on coverage, repeat and cutting waste.

Frequently asked questions

Is floor area the same as wall area?

No. Floor area is length × width; room wall area uses the perimeter multiplied by wall height.

Should I include baseboards and crown molding?

For paint planning you may leave narrow trim areas in as a cushion. For wallpaper or panels, subtract only what the product will not cover.

Can I use this for an accent wall?
