How the wall molding calculator works
The calculator spaces picture frame molding evenly across a wall. It uses one rule: the side margins and the gaps between frames are equal, so the layout looks balanced from any angle.
The formula
Frame width = (wall width − 2 × margin − (frames − 1) × gap) ÷ frames
Frame height = wall height − baseboard − top margin − bottom margin
Molding per frame = 2 × (frame width + frame height). Add 10% for waste and touch ups.
Worked example: a 12 ft wall with 3 frames
- Wall: 144 in wide, 96 in high (8 ft ceiling), 4 in baseboard
- Margins and gaps: 6 in
- Frame width: (144 − 12 − 12) ÷ 3 = 40 in
- Frame height: 96 − 4 − 6 − 6 = 80 in
- Molding per frame: 2 × (40 + 80) = 240 in, so 3 frames need 720 in, which is 60 ft, or about 66 ft with 10% extra
Frame widths for common walls (6 in margins and gaps)
| Wall width | Frames | Margin and gap | Frame width |
|---|---|---|---|
| 8 ft (96 in) | 3 | 6 in | 24.0 in |
| 10 ft (120 in) | 3 | 6 in | 32.0 in |
| 12 ft (144 in) | 3 | 6 in | 40.0 in |
| 12 ft (144 in) | 4 | 6 in | 28.5 in |
| 14 ft (168 in) | 4 | 6 in | 34.5 in |
| 16 ft (192 in) | 5 | 6 in | 31.2 in |
Rules of thumb
- Keep margins and gaps between 4 and 8 in; wider than 8 in starts to look empty.
- Choose an odd number of frames (3 or 5) on a plain wall, and frame around windows or a bed on a feature wall.
- For a half wall, place the chair rail at about one third of the ceiling height: 32 in on an 8 ft ceiling, 36 in on 9 ft.

Plan your layout
Picture frame spacing calculator
Enter the usable width of one wall in inches. The result gives an even frame width and a starting point for planning; check your kit measurements before ordering.
How the wall molding calculator works
The calculator subtracts both side margins and every gap from the usable wall width, then divides the remaining space evenly across the selected number of picture-frame panels. The result is a balanced starting width for each wall molding frame.
- Measure the usable wall width after allowing for corners, doors and permanent fixtures.
- Choose the number of frames and the clear gap you want between them.
- Review the suggested frame width and confirm the layout around outlets and switches.
