Wainscoting Calculator

Free wainscoting planning tool

Enter the wall and ceiling dimensions to estimate a balanced wainscoting height, equal panel widths, chair rail length, molding footage and cut list.

How the wainscoting calculator works

The calculator starts with a practical lower-wall proportion, then distributes matching frames across the measured width. It keeps the side margins and gaps consistent so the panel run ends cleanly instead of leaving a narrow partial panel at one corner.

  1. Measure the finished wall width and full ceiling height.
  2. Enter the baseboard height, frame count and desired inset.
  3. Review the recommended finished height, panel width, chair rail and molding total.
  4. Confirm the layout with painter’s tape before ordering or cutting.

Starting height

One third of the wall height is a useful starting point: about 32 in on an 8 ft wall and 36 in on a 9 ft wall. It is not a fixed rule. Windows, switches, tables, stair rails and room proportions can justify a different finished height.

Worked example

A 144 in wall with five equal panels and 4 in margins and gaps leaves 120 in for the frames, or 24 in per frame. Add the full wall-width chair rail and 10% material allowance before converting the total to stock lengths.

Plan before installation

Mark the chair rail first, then check that every panel clears outlets and other obstructions. Measure older walls in several places because floors and ceilings may not be level. The result is a planning estimate; use the actual wall and molding profile to approve the final cut list.

Wainscoting calculator FAQ

How high should wainscoting be?

About one third of the wall height is a common starting point, but visual alignment with windows, furniture and switches matters more than a universal number.

Does chair rail height equal frame height?

No. The decorative frame normally sits below the chair rail with a visible inset above and below it.

How many panels should I use?

Choose a count that keeps panels wide enough for the selected molding profile. Four or five panels often suit a 10–12 ft wall, but the calculator lets you compare alternatives.

Should I add waste?

Add at least 10% for cuts and site adjustments. Complicated corners or first-time installation may need more.
