How we calculate board and batten spacing

Board and batten looks right when every gap on the wall is the same. Most people pick a spacing, start at one corner and end up with a thin leftover gap at the other side. This calculator works backwards from the wall width so that never happens.

First it estimates how many battens fit with your target spacing:

Battens = round((wall width − batten width) ÷ (target spacing + batten width)) + 1

Then it spreads the leftover space evenly:

Actual gap = (wall width − battens × batten width) ÷ (battens − 1)

The count always includes a batten at each corner. That frames the wall and gives the paint a clean edge where two walls meet. Each batten runs from the floor or baseboard up to the top rail, so the calculator takes the rail width off the batten length. The top rail and any horizontal rows run the full wall width.

Total length is every batten plus every horizontal piece. We cut from 240 cm (94.5 in) sticks, so the calculator packs your pieces onto sticks the way we would cut them and tells you how many sticks the wall uses. A run longer than one stick, like the top rail on a 12 ft wall, gets one neat joint that disappears under caulk and paint.

Board and batten spacing chart

Counts below use 2.5 inch battens, a top rail and an 8 ft ceiling. The last column is a two thirds height wall at 16 inch spacing as a pre-cut self-adhesive kit.

Wall width 16 in spacing 24 in spacing 2/3 height kit
8 ft 6 battens, 16.2 in gap 5 battens, 20.9 in gap 11.8 m, about $130
10 ft 7 battens, 17.1 in gap 5 battens, 26.9 in gap 14.0 m, about $154
12 ft 9 battens, 15.2 in gap 6 battens, 25.8 in gap 17.7 m, about $195
14 ft 10 battens, 15.9 in gap 7 battens, 25.1 in gap 19.9 m, about $219
16 ft 11 battens, 16.4 in gap 8 battens, 24.6 in gap 22.1 m, about $243

Notice the 10 ft wall at 24 inch spacing: five battens give a 26.9 inch gap, six would give 21 inches. When the result lands between two counts, try both in the calculator and look at the preview. Wider gaps feel modern and calm, tighter gaps feel more traditional.

Measuring tips before you order

  • Measure the width at the height where the top rail will sit. Old walls are rarely perfectly square.
  • Measure height from the top of the baseboard if you are keeping it, or from the floor if the battens will sit on the floor.
  • Mark outlets and switches. A batten can usually shift an inch left or right to clear them without anyone noticing.
  • Windows and doors split the wall into sections. Run the calculator once for each section, or send us a photo and we will lay it out for you.

Board and batten calculator FAQ

How far apart should board and batten be?

Most walls look balanced with 12 to 24 inches between battens. Sixteen inches is a common starting point, and the calculator adjusts it so every gap is equal.

How many battens do I need for a 10 ft wall?

With 2.5 inch battens and a 16 inch target spacing, a 10 ft wall takes seven battens with an approximately 17.1 inch gap. The calculator includes the battens at each corner.

Should battens go to the ceiling?

Full-height battens can make a ceiling feel taller. Two-thirds height with a top rail creates a classic board and batten look, while half-height layouts work well in dining rooms and hallways.

Do I need a top rail?

A top rail gives partial-height battens a clean finish line. On full-height walls, battens can meet the ceiling or crown molding instead.

Board and Batten Calculator FAQ

How far apart should board and batten be?

Most walls look balanced with 12 to 24 inches between battens. 16 inches is the most common choice because it matches stud spacing and suits 8 to 9 ft ceilings. The calculator keeps your target spacing and then adjusts it slightly so every gap on the wall is exactly the same.

How many battens do I need for a 10 ft wall?

With 2.5 inch battens and a 16 inch target spacing, a 10 ft wall takes 7 battens with a 17.1 inch gap. At 24 inch spacing it takes 5 battens. Both counts include the battens at each corner.

Should battens go to the ceiling?

Full height battens make a ceiling feel taller and work well in bedrooms and entryways. Two thirds height with a top rail is the classic farmhouse look, and half height works well in dining rooms, hallways and anywhere chairs touch the wall.

How much does a board and batten wall cost?

A typical 12 ft by 8 ft wall at two thirds height needs about 17.7 m (58 ft) of trim, which is roughly $195 as a pre-cut self-adhesive kit. Paint and a few hours of your time are the only other costs. The calculator shows the price for your exact wall.

Do I need a top rail?

Yes for anything shorter than full height. The top rail gives the battens a clean finish line and hides small differences in batten length. On full height walls you can skip it and let the battens meet the ceiling or crown.
