This is a measured half wall paneling layout for a 16 ft (488 cm) wide wall with an 8 ft (244 cm) ceiling. An 8 ft ceiling is the US standard, so this is the layout most kits are designed around. A 16 ft wall is typical of an open-plan living space, a great room or a long hallway.

Why this layout works
Half wall paneling stops at about 42", the height of a chair back, which protects the wall and visually lowers a tall room. Battens about 12" apart look tailored.
Time and materials
This layout has 16 pieces. With pre-cut, numbered pieces expect about 1 h 48 min to install, plus paint drying time. Cutting the same layout from raw trim adds roughly 2 to 3 hours of measuring and mitering.

How to install
- Mark the rail or ledge height with a laser level.
- Measure the spacing in from each corner and lightly pencil the outlines.
- Fix long pieces first, then work from the centre of the wall outwards.
- Caulk miters, fill seams and paint wall and trim one color for a built-in look.
