Picture Frame Molding Layout for a 16 ft Wall, 9 ft Ceiling

This is a measured picture frame molding layout for a 16 ft (488 cm) wide wall with a 9 ft (274 cm) ceiling. Long walls like this are common in open-plan living rooms and great rooms; the extra ceiling height goes to the upper frames while the chair rail stays at 36".

Why this layout works

Six frames per row keep each frame near 27.5 inches wide. On a 16 ft wall, 5 frames would be 34 inches wide and look heavy next to tall 9 ft proportions.

Time and materials

This layout has 49 pieces. With pre-cut, numbered pieces expect about 3 h 30 min to install, plus paint drying time. Cutting the same layout from raw trim adds roughly 6 to 9 hours of measuring and mitering. The 16 ft chair rail is usually joined from two lengths with a scarf joint.

How to install

1. Mark the rail line at 36" with a laser level and fit the rail first.
2. Measure 4" in from each corner and between frames; pencil the outlines.
3. Fix the 12 frames from the centre of the wall outwards.
4. Caulk miters and paint wall and trim one color.
