Cut list

Piece Qty Length each
Vertical batten 10 2' 11" (89 cm)
Top rail 1 12' (366 cm)
Top cap (ledge) 1 12' (366 cm)

Total: 53 linear ft (16.2 m). Order about 59 linear ft (+10% for offcuts).

Why this layout works

Half walls look tailored with closer battens than full board and batten: about 12 inches apart. At 42 inches the cap sits above chair backs and below light switches.

Time and materials

This layout has 12 pieces. With pre-cut pieces expect about 1 h 40 min to install, plus paint drying time.

How to install

  1. Mark the cap line at 42" with a laser level.
  2. Fix the top rail just under the line, then the battens at equal spacing.
  3. Glue the cap on top of the rail so it overhangs slightly as a ledge.
  4. Caulk and paint; a darker color below and lighter above works well.
