Wainscoting Panels: Sizes, Heights & Pre-Cut Kits

Wainscoting panels (often spelled wainscotting in the UK and Canada) are the framed or flat panels that cover the lower part of a wall under a chair rail. They started as a way to protect plaster from chair backs and damp; today they are the quickest way to give a plain room period character.

Three types of wainscoting panels

Framed panels: rectangles of molding under a rail, the most common look in dining rooms and halls. Board and batten: vertical battens with a ledge, more farmhouse and modern. Beadboard: narrow tongue and groove boards, mostly in bathrooms and kitchens. The layouts below are for framed panels, which suit almost any room.

Panel width rule of thumb

Aim for panels 20 to 30 inches wide and keep the gap between panels the same as the gap to the corners. On a typical 8 ft dining room wall that gives three panels; on a 12 ft wall, five.

Wainscoting height by ceiling

Ceiling Classic height Tall look
8 ft 32 to 36 in 42 in
9 ft 36 in 42 to 48 in
10 ft 36 to 42 in 48 to 54 in

Example: 8 ft wall

On an 8 ft wall use 3 wainscoting frames, each 2' 3.5" (70 cm) wide and 2' 1" (64 cm) tall, spaced 3.5" (9 cm) apart under a chair rail at 3' (91 cm). Total about 38 linear ft with waste.

Common questions

Is it wainscoting or wainscotting?

Both. Wainscoting is the usual US spelling; wainscotting is common in the UK, Ireland and Canada. They mean the same thing.

Are wainscoting panels expensive?

A pre-cut kit for one wall starts from about $75. The main saving is time: no measuring or mitering, just fixing numbered pieces.

Can wainscoting go in a bathroom?

Yes, with waterproof panels or fully sealed MDF and a gloss or semi-gloss paint. Keep the top at least 6 inches above the backsplash or tub edge.
