Batten Trim for Walls: Widths, Spacing & Kits
Batten trim is the flat strip used to make board and batten walls. Unlike decorative moulding it has square edges, so the look depends almost entirely on width and spacing.
Batten widths
2.5 to 3.5 inch (60 to 90 mm) battens suit most rooms. Narrow battens look delicate on short walls; wider battens look bolder on tall walls and with ledges. Thickness of 8 to 12 mm is plenty for interior walls.
Vertical, grid or horizontal
Vertical battens make a room feel taller. Adding horizontal battens creates a grid (shaker style). Horizontal-only battens widen a narrow hallway visually.
Example layouts with real measurements
8 ft wall, 9 ft ceiling
On an 8 ft wall use 6 vertical battens (3" wide) spaced 1' 3.5" (39 cm) apart, with the top rail at 5' 7.5" (171 cm). Total about 43 linear ft with waste.
10 ft wall, 9 ft ceiling
On a 10 ft wall use 7 vertical battens (3" wide) spaced 1' 4.5" (42 cm) apart, with the top rail at 5' 7.5" (171 cm). Total about 50 linear ft with waste.
Common questions
What size batten is best for board and batten?
A 3 inch (75 mm) wide, 8 to 10 mm thick batten is the most versatile size. Go up to 3.5 inches on walls over 9 ft or when the battens run floor to ceiling.
Do battens need to go into studs?
No. Light MDF battens hold on drywall with construction adhesive and a few brad nails angled in opposite directions. Hitting studs is a bonus, not a requirement.
Should the battens start at the corners?
Yes. Put a batten tight into each corner, then divide the space between them equally. That keeps both ends of the wall symmetrical.
