MDF Wall Mouldings: Profiles, Sizes & Pre-Cut Kits
MDF wall mouldings are profiled strips of medium density fibreboard used for panelling, frames and rails. They are the standard material for interior wall trim because they are straight, smooth and cheap compared with solid wood.
MDF vs pine vs polyurethane
| MDF | Pine | Polyurethane | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Straightness | Excellent | Can bow | Excellent |
| Paint finish | Smooth | Grain shows | Smooth |
| Moisture | Seal edges | Good | Waterproof |
| Cost | Low | Medium | Higher |
Thickness to choose
For applied frames, 8 to 12 mm thick MDF is enough and light enough to glue. Shaker boards are usually 9 to 12 mm thick and 70 to 95 mm wide.
Example layouts with real measurements
8 ft wall, 8 ft ceiling
On an 8 ft wall use a 4 × 3 shaker grid of MDF boards: panels 1' 8" (51 cm) wide by 2' 2.5" (67 cm) tall, framed with 3" boards. Total about 72 linear ft with waste.
Common questions
Is MDF good for wall panelling?
Yes, for dry interior rooms it is the best value: it stays straight, has no knots and paints smoothly. Prime every cut edge before painting so the edges do not soak up paint.
Can MDF moulding go in a bathroom?
Only if it is fully sealed on all faces and edges and the room is well ventilated. Near showers or tubs choose PVC or a waterproof kit instead.
How do you attach MDF moulding to a wall?
Construction adhesive plus 18 gauge brad nails into the drywall or studs. Light profiles up to 10 mm can be fixed with high-tack adhesive alone on smooth painted walls.
