Arched Wall Molding Layout for a 10 ft Wall

This is a measured arched molding layout for a 10 ft (305 cm) wide wall with a standard 8 ft (244 cm) ceiling. Three tall arches soften a bedroom or dining wall and work well behind a bed or a console.

Answer: on a 10 ft wall use 3 arched frames, each 2' 8" (81 cm) wide and 6' 2" (188 cm) tall to the top of the arch, spaced 6" (15 cm) apart.

Cut list

Piece Qty Length each
Arch side 6 4' 10" (147 cm)
Arch bottom 3 2' 8" (81 cm)
Arch top (flexible) 3 4' 2.5" (128 cm)

Total: 50 linear ft (15.1 m). Order about 55 linear ft (+10% for offcuts).

Why this layout works

Each arch top is a true semicircle with a 16" radius, so the curve is half the frame width. Arches near 28 to 32 inches wide look elegant; narrower arches look pinched and wider ones look squat.

Time and materials

This layout has 12 pieces. With pre-cut pieces expect about 1 h 40 min to install. The arch tops are flexible molding, so they bend into shape without kerf cuts.

How to install

  1. Draw the centre line of each arch and mark the spring point where the curve starts, 4' 10" above the bottom rail.
  2. Fix the two straight sides and the bottom of each arch.
  3. Bend the flexible top from one side to the other, gluing as you go.
  4. Caulk joints and paint.

Questions about this wall size

How many arches fit on a 10 ft wall?

Three arches, each 32 inches wide with 6 inch gaps, fill a 10 ft wall evenly.

What is the radius of the arch?

16 inches (41 cm), half the arch width, which makes a full semicircle.

Can arches go above a chair rail instead?

Yes. Keep the same widths and start the arches at the rail; the arches become shorter but the curve stays the same.
