Peel and Stick Picture Frame Molding: No-Nail Kits

Peel and stick picture frame molding is the renter and beginner version of classic box trim: pre-cut, pre-mitered frames that stick to the wall with tape. No nail holes, no miter saw, and most walls take under three hours.

Peel and stick vs nailed frames

Wall damage Minimal, removable Nail holes to fill
Best for Renters, smooth walls Owners, any wall

Getting square frames

Stick the top piece first against a laser line, then the two sides, then the bottom. The pre-cut miters close themselves if the top is level.

Example layouts with real measurements

8 ft wall, 9 ft ceiling

On an 8 ft wall use 3 upper and 3 lower frames, each 2' 2.5" (67 cm) wide, spaced 4" (10 cm) apart, with a chair rail at 3' (91 cm). Upper frames are 5' 0.5" (154 cm) tall and lower frames 2' (61 cm) tall. Total about 85 linear ft with waste.

10 ft wall, 9 ft ceiling

On a 10 ft wall use 3 upper and 3 lower frames, each 2' 10.5" (88 cm) wide, spaced 4" (10 cm) apart, with a chair rail at 3' (91 cm). Upper frames are 5' 0.5" (154 cm) tall and lower frames 2' (61 cm) tall. Total about 96 linear ft with waste.

Will peel and stick molding hold?

Yes on smooth, painted, dust-free drywall. Wipe the wall with isopropyl alcohol, press each strip for 30 seconds and let the adhesive cure 24 hours before caulking or painting. On textured walls, fresh paint (under 2 weeks) or in bathrooms, add a few dabs of construction adhesive. Removal: warm the strip with a hair dryer and lift slowly to protect the paint.

Common questions

How do I make my own picture frame moulding?

Measure the wall, decide the frame count so each frame is 20 to 40 inches wide, cut 45 degree miters, glue and pin the frames, then caulk and paint. A pre-cut kit skips the measuring and cutting: pieces arrive mitered and numbered.

How much does picture frame molding cost?

For one accent wall, a pre-cut kit starts from about $70 and goes up with frame count and wall size. Cutting raw MDF trim yourself costs less in material but needs a miter saw and usually 4 to 6 hours of measuring and cutting before installation starts.

What is the trim around a picture frame called?

Molding applied to a flat wall to make rectangles is called picture frame molding, box molding or applied panel molding. When it covers only the lower third of the wall under a chair rail it is called wainscoting.
