How to Calculate Wall Panel Spacing (Without the Guesswork)

To calculate wall panel spacing, subtract both outer margins and the total width of all frames from the wall width, then divide the remaining space by one fewer than the number of frames. In formula form: Gap = (Wall width − (2 × outer margin) − (frame count × frame width)) ÷ (frame count − 1). Use the same unit for every measurement. The worked example below shows how to apply the equation, check the proportions and adjust a layout when the wall contains fixed features.

The formula

Gap = (Wall width − (2 × outer margin) − (frame count × frame width)) ÷ (frame count − 1) The Peel and Stick Board and Batten Trim Set is a pre-cut, self-adhesive kit that can be painted to match the wall.

That is it. Everything else is a decision about what to put into it. For a no-saw, no-nail route, the Board and Batten Accent Wall Panels comes pre-cut and self-adhesive.

A worked example

Say you have a wall 360 cm wide and you want three frames.

  • Wall width: 360 cm
  • Outer margin you like the look of: 20 cm each side
  • Space left for frames and gaps: 360 − 40 = 320 cm
  • Frame width you want: 90 cm each, so 270 cm of frame
  • Space left for gaps: 320 − 270 = 50 cm
  • Number of gaps between three frames: 2
  • Gap = 50 ÷ 2 = 25 cm

Check it against the margin: gap 25 cm, margin 20 cm. The margin is smaller than the gap, which will read as crowded at the corners. Either widen the margin to 25 cm and recalculate, or narrow the frames to 85 cm and let the gap fall to 20 cm so gap and margin match.

Proportions that look right

  • Margins ≥ gaps. The space at the corners should never be tighter than the space between frames.
  • Frames taller than they are wide, for a single row on a full-height wall. Squares read as static; portrait rectangles read as architecture.
  • Two-row layouts: the lower row is usually shorter than the upper row, with the dividing line around one third of the wall height, the same line a chair rail would sit on.
  • Odd numbers across a wall generally look more settled than even numbers, because there is a frame at the centre rather than a gap.

When the wall is not empty

Outlets, switches and radiators do not have to break the layout. Plan the gaps to fall where the obstruction is: a switch sitting in a 25 cm gap looks deliberate, while a switch cutting through a frame edge looks like a mistake. If an obstruction lands mid-frame and cannot be moved, drop the frame count by one and recalculate.

Let the calculator do it

All of the above is handled by our free wall molding calculator: enter the wall dimensions and the frame count and it returns margins, frame sizes and gaps together. For vertical battens, the board and batten calculator takes wall width, batten width and batten count and gives you the clear spacing. The Board and Batten Decorative Wall Panels is a ready-to-assemble kit in paintable MDF.

Then pick the kit

Once the numbers are settled, the kit follows. Browse every wall molding kit, or go straight to classic picture frame layouts or flat modern profiles depending on the look you are after. Every kit ships cut and mitered, so the spacing you worked out is the spacing you get.
