Panel Molding for Walls: Sizes, Spacing and Layouts

Panel molding for walls is thin decorative trim fixed directly to a flat wall to create rectangles, squares or arches. It gives a plain drywall wall the look of traditional raised paneling for a fraction of the cost, and it is the base of picture frame molding, wainscoting and most modern accent walls.

Quick answer: use a 1 in (2.5 cm) profile for most rooms; a bolder 1.6 in (4 cm) profile can be made to order for very large walls. Keep 3.5 to 4 in between panels and 4 to 6 in at the corners. A 12 ft wall typically takes 3 or 4 panels per row and about 60 to 95 linear ft of molding.

Panel molding layouts that work

12 ft wall, 4 tall panel molding frames

Worked example: 13 ft living room wall with a 55 in TV

A 156 in wide, 96 in high wall with the TV centered at 48 in to the screen middle. Use 3 tall panels: a 66 in wide center panel framing the TV and two side panels of 33 in, with 6 in corner margins and 4 in gaps (6 + 33 + 4 + 66 + 4 + 33 + 6 = 152, leaving 4 in to split at the corners). Frames start 6 in above the baseboard and stop 6 in below the ceiling, so each is 80 in tall. Total molding: about 2 x (66+80) + 4 x (33+80) = 744 in, or 62 ft, plus 10 percent waste.

How to install panel molding on a wall

  1. Mark a level reference line and the corners of each panel with a pencil and a laser or level.
  2. Check outlets and switches. Shift the whole layout by up to 2 in so outlets fall inside a panel.
  3. Fix pieces with dots of silicone or molding adhesive on the back. Self-adhesive kits simply press on.
  4. Fill the joints with joint compound or caulk, sand lightly, then paint wall and molding together.

With pre-cut pieces there are no miter cuts to make; a 12 ft wall takes about 3 to 5 hours.

Panel molding FAQ

What is panel molding?

Thin decorative trim applied to a flat wall to create the look of paneling. It is also called box molding, picture frame molding or applied molding.

What size panel molding should I use?

1 in (2.5 cm) suits almost every room. A 1.6 in (4 cm) profile can be made to order for very large walls. Pair it with a 2.4 in (6 cm) chair rail.

How far apart should panel molding be?

3.5 to 4 in between panels and 4 to 6 in from corners, ceilings and baseboards. Keep every gap identical.

Is panel molding expensive?

No. With a pre-cut kit you skip the carpenter's measuring and miter cutting, which is usually the largest part of the cost.

Can panel molding go on textured walls?

Yes, with silicone or molding adhesive rather than tape, plus a thin line of caulk or joint compound to hide gaps.
